Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, grief, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown; therefore it usually has a negative connotation.
Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. When designing art or photography, you can use a black or gray background to make the other colors stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme (as we saw in the Chick-Fil-A ad).

makeitoneformybaby is black with bright colors, particularly reds and oranges, but i don't see it as aggressive. i see it as playful. i chose black for the elegance. the bright colors stand out to emphasize key words and phrases, but altogether, it represents a highspirited elegance to me.
Interesting that a color conceived as neutral is significantly poly-valent, that is, with multiple somewhat contradictory resonances. Can we say that in all or most cases it signals power and awe (a form of mystery), whereas gray tones (newer post) signal dullness and weakness?
